Zygmunt Bauman

Forfatterbiografi

Zygmunt Bauman (født 19. november 1925 i Poznań, Polen, død 9. januar 2017 i Leeds, England) var polsk-britisk sociolog og en af Europas mest indflydelsesrige offentlige intellektuelle. Hans forfatterskab udviklede en kritisk analyse af modernitetens skiftende vilkår og deres konsekvenser for fællesskab, identitet og ulighed. Bauman blev uddannet i Warszawa og blev senere knyttet til universitetsmiljøet i Det Forenede Kongerige, hvor han blandt andet var professor ved University of Leeds og senere emeritus. Hans tekster bevæger sig især i sociologiens og socialteoriens grænseland mod filosofi og etik. Blandt hans kendte værker er Modernity and the Holocaust samt bøger, der er blevet centrale for forståelsen af sen- og forbrugssamfundets logikker, herunder Liquid Modernity og Liquid Love. Værkerne kredser ofte om, hvordan mennesker i stigende grad bliver gjort “udskiftelige” i sociale og økonomiske systemer, og hvordan fattigdom og social eksklusion får nye former i en verden præget af forbrug og fleksibilitet. Hans bidrag blev anerkendt med flere internationale priser, herunder European Amalfi Prize for Sociology and Social Sciences i 1989 og Theodor W. Adorno-Prize i 1998. Bauman regnes derfor som en væsentlig stemme i moderne litteratur og samfundstænkning, fordi han gav et sammenhængende, sprogligt skarpt blik på de strukturelle forandringer, der former samtidens livsformer.
