Forfatterbiografi

Sir Walter Scott (15. august 1771–21. september 1832) var en skotsk forfatter, poet og historiker, som især fik stor betydning for den historiske roman og den romantiske fortællekunst. Han hørte hjemme i Skotland og bevægede sig i et bredt litterært felt, hvor han både skrev fortællinger, digte og historiske værker. Scotts ry byggede på hans evne til at omsætte fortidens miljøer og traditioner til levende fiktion, og hans navn forbindes derfor ofte med gennembruddet for den moderne historiefortælling i romanform. Hans indflydelse kan også ses i den måde Robin Hood-legenden blev litterært genfortolket på; blandt andet forbindes fortællingen “Robin Hood: a tale of the olden time” (1819) med hans arbejde med middelalderlige stofkredse. Scott blev fremhævet i samtidens institutionsliv og var længe præsident for Royal Society of Edinburgh (1820–1832).
