Forfatterbiografi

Umberto Eco (født 5. januar 1932 i Alessandria, død 19. februar 2016 i Milano) var en italiensk litteraturkritiker, romanforfatter og semiotiker, kendt for at forbinde dybdelæsning af tegn og fortællinger med spændende fiktion. Han publicerede sig både som akademiker og som forfatter, og hans forfatterskab bevæger sig især i retning af intellektuelle romaner, ofte med historiske og satiriske elementer samt en stærk metarefleksion over, hvordan historier og ideer skabes. Eco slog tidligt sit navn fast inden for humaniora, og hans internationale gennembrud kom med romanen Il nome della rosa (Rosens navn). Senere skrev han blandt andet Le pendule de Foucault (Foucaults pendul) og Le cimetière de Prague (Prags kirkegård). Nummer nul (Numero Zero) er hans sidste roman udgivet i hans levetid, og den passer tematisk ind i hans interesse for medier, illusioner og fortællingens mekanismer.
