Forfatterbiografi

Roland Barthes (1915–1980) var en fransk essayist, litterær kritiker og semio­tiker, hvis arbejde fik stor betydning for den strukturalistiske og senere tekstteoretiske tradition. Han udviklede metoder til at læse kulturens tegn og fortællinger, og hans essays viste, hvordan tilsyneladende selvfølgelige fænomener rummer skjulte antagelser og betydningssystemer. Barthes’ karriere knyttede ham til forskningsmiljøer i Frankrig og kulminerede i hans udnævnelse til professorstolen i litterær semiologi ved Collège de France. Blandt hans kendte værker er Mythologies (1957), som undersøger populærkulturens myter, samt La Tour Eiffel og andre essays, der på lignende måde analyserer den moderne hverdag som tekst. Han skrev også om skrivning og læsning, herunder Le degré zéro de l’écriture og Le plaisir du texte, og hans tanker om forfatterens rolle i fortolkningen har været meget indflydelsesrige i litteraturvidenskaben. Barthes’ tilgang forbindes ofte med ideer om “forfatterens død” og læserens aktive arbejde, og hans betydning ses fortsat i måden, der analyseres på tværs af litteratur, sprog og medier.
