Robert E. Howard (Robert Ervin Howard) var en amerikansk forfatter af pulp-fiktion, født 22. januar 1906 i Texas og død 11. juni 1936. Han skrev især inden for fantasy og beslægtede genrer som sword and sorcery, hvor han udviklede sit eget barske univers fyldt med mytisk historie, eventyr og spænding. Howard blev særligt kendt for figuren Conan the Cimmerian, der voksede frem i magasinet Weird Tales fra begyndelsen af 1930’erne. Fortællingen “Queen of the Black Coast” er en af de tidlige Conan-historier; den blev første gang publiceret i Weird Tales i maj 1934, og senere udgivelser og samlinger har bidraget til Conans varige popularitet. Hans forfatterskab havde stor betydning for fantasy-litteraturen, fordi han med sit tempo og sine skarpe figurer var med til at definere den moderne sword-and-sorcery-stil.
