Forfatterbiografi

Octavia Estelle Butler (født 22. juni 1947 i Pasadena, California, USA; død 24. februar 2006 i Seattle, Washington) var en amerikansk forfatter, især kendt for science fiction og beslægtet spekulativ fiktion. Hendes romaner og noveller kombinerede ofte hård social og politisk analyse med fremmede verdener, fremtidige samfund og biologiske eller teknologiske gennembrud. Butler skrev i en genre, hvor hun både udfordrede og udvidede grænserne for fortællinger om magt, slægtskab, race og forandring. Hun publicerede senere bl.a. Xenogenesis-trilogien, hvis tredje del er Imago (udgivet i 1989), samt The Parable of the Sower og The Parable of the Talents. Butler blev internationalt anerkendt gennem store litterære og genreorienterede priser. Blandt hendes mest markante sejre var Hugo- og Nebula-udmærkelserne for novellen “Bloodchild” samt en Hugo-pris for “Speech Sounds”. I 1995 modtog hun desuden MacArthur Fellowship, hvilket understregede hendes betydning som en nyskabende stemme i samtidslitteraturen. Som en af de mest indflydelsesrige afroamerikanske science fiction-forfattere har Butler haft varig betydning for genrens udvikling og for den måde, afrofuturisme og feministisk tematik ofte behandles i spekulativ fiktion.
