Forfatterbiografi

Ngugi wa Thiong’o (James Ngugi) var en kenyansk forfatter og akademiker, født i 1938. Han døde i 2025. Han regnes som en af de mest betydningsfulde stemmer i moderne afrikansk litteratur og forbandt fortælleteknik og litterær form med et stærkt politisk og sprogligt engagement. Gennem romaner, dramatik og essayistik skrev han om Kenyas historie og magtforhold, fra kolonialisme til efterkoloniale vilkår, og han gjorde samtidig sproget til et centralt litterært anliggende. Et vigtigt spor i hans karriere var bestræbelsen på at skrive på sit oprindelige sprog, kikuyu, og dermed udfordre de sproglige hierarkier, som fulgte med kolonitidens uddannelsessystem. Hans kendte værker omfatter blandt andet Decolonizing the Mind og romanerne The Wizard of the Crow og Petals of Blood, og han arbejdede også med autobiografiske og essayistiske former. I 2020 udgav han The Perfect Nine, en episk genfortælling af gikuyu-folkets oprindelseshistorie, som han skrev på kikuyu og siden bearbejdede til engelsk. Hans betydning for litteraturen hænger både sammen med hans store litterære produktion og med hans vedvarende insisteren på litteraturens rolle som kulturel og politisk kraft.
