Nathaniel Hawthorne

Forfatterbiografi

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) var en amerikansk forfatter, kendt især som roman- og novelleskribent. Han blev født 4. juli 1804 i Salem i Massachusetts og døde 19. maj 1864 i Plymouth i New Hampshire. Hawthorne regnes som en af de store skikkelser i 1800-tallets amerikanske litteratur, og hans forfatterskab forbinder psykologisk og moralsk skarpsindighed med en mørk, historisk stemning. Han skrev både længere værker og noveller og arbejdede ofte med temaer som skyld, skam, arv og menneskets indre konflikter i et puritansk præg. Hans betydning ses ikke mindst i hovedværkerne The Scarlet Letter, som er blandt de mest kendte amerikanske romaner, og The House of the Seven Gables. Hawthorne står også centralt i udviklingen af den amerikanske kortprosa, blandt andet gennem novellesamlinger som Twice-Told Tales. Han udgav flere bøger i løbet af sit liv, og selv om han kæmpede for at leve af sit forfatterskab, blev hans kunst efterhånden bredt anerkendt.
