Forfatterbiografi

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 f.Kr.) var romersk politiker, advokat, filosof og forfatter, kendt især som en af antikkens største talere og som en afgørende stilskaber for latinsk prosa. Han blev født i Arpinum og var romer; han skrev på latin og arbejdede på tværs af retorik, politik og filosofi, hvilket afspejler sig i både hans talevirksomhed og hans mange skrifter. I litteraturhistorien fremhæves Cicero ofte for at forme en klassisk, argumenterende prosa og for at udbrede græske idéer om filosofi, stat og etik til romerske læsere. Som forfatter skrev han både filosofiske dialoger og retoriske værker, hvorunder Hortensius indtager en særlig plads. Hortensius (45 f.Kr.) er en filosofisk dialog, som ikke er bevaret i fuld udstrækning, men som kendes gennem overleverede fragmenter og omtaler; værket blev senere forbundet med interessen for filosofi hos kirkefædre som Augustin. Cicero står dermed som en central figur for forståelsen af overgangen mellem senrepublikansk tankeliv og den langvarige modtagelse af romersk litteratur i Europa.
