Forfatterbiografi

Len Deighton (født Leonard Cyril Deighton) var en britisk forfatter, journalist og filmproducent, bedst kendt for sine kolde-krigs spionthrillere. Han blev født i Marylebone i London den 18. februar 1929 og døde den 15. marts 2026. Deighton skrev på tværs af genrer, men hans navn forbindes især med en kølig, satirisk og stærkt realistisk stil, hvor bedrag og klassebevidsthed iagttages lige så skarpt som efterretningsspil. Hans gennembrud kom med debutromanen The Ipcress File (1962), der gjorde ham til en hovedskikkelse i udviklingen af den moderne britiske spionroman; flere af hans bøger blev senere filmatiseret, herunder Billion-Dollar Brain, der udkom som roman og blev filmisk kendt i serien. Ud over fiktionen skrev han også historiske værker og kogebøger, og han arbejdede før litteraturen bl.a. som illustrator og i forbindelse med kunst og presse. Deightons betydning for genren ligger i, at han fornyede spændingsfortællingen med en ubeslutsom og ofte socialt frustreret virkelighedsnær fortæller og en undertekst, der afslører institutioner indefra. Samtidig nævner kilder, at han generelt ikke søgte litterære gatekeeper-priser, men snarere lod popularitet og gennemslagskraft bære værkernes indflydelse.
