Forfatterbiografi

Joseph Conrad (født Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski den 3. december 1857 i Berdichev, daværende Russiske Kejserrige; død 3. august 1924 i Canterbury, England) var en polskfødte britisk forfatter, bedst kendt for romaner og noveller på engelsk. Hans internationale baggrund og skiftet fra en kontinentaleuropæisk erfaring til et engelsk sprog prægede hans litterære blik og bidrog til, at han ofte regnes blandt de store modernister i den engelske litteratur. Conrad skrev særlig inden for genrerne maritim fortællekunst, psykologisk realisme og eventyr-/spændingsfortælling, hvor han undersøger fremmedgørelse, moral og menneskets sårbarhed. Conrad fik tidligt og fortsat stor betydning gennem en række centrale værker som Lord Jim (1900), Nostromo (1904) og The Secret Agent (1907) samt den berømte novelle “Heart of Darkness” (1902). I fortællingerne kombinerer han ofte en dramatisk ydre handling med en indre, refleksiv og tvetydig analyse af motiver og erkendelse, hvilket også kan ses i samlingen A Set of Six, der samler seks korttekster af forskellig tone og form.
