John Wyndham

Forfatterbiografi

John Wyndham (født John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris, 10. juli 1903 i Birmingham, England) var en engelsk forfatter og en af 1900-tallets mest indflydelsesrige stemmer inden for science fiction. Han døde 11. marts 1969 i London. Wyndham skrev især om kriser og overlevelse, hvor naturens og teknologiens krumning pludselig underminerer et tilsyneladende trygt hverdagsliv. I romaner og fortællinger kombinerede han genrens spekulative idéer med en jordnær fortællestil og et skarpt blik for menneskelige reaktioner under pres. Hans værker omfatter klassikere som The Day of the Triffids, The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids og The Midwich Cuckoos. Trouble with Lichen (1960) viser samme karakteristiske blanding af et aktuelt tankevækkende problemfelt og et folkeligt, dramatisk narrativ. Wyndhams betydning for litteraturen ligger især i hans evne til at gøre katastrofescenarier læsbare og følelsesmæssigt nærværende, og han regnes ofte for en forfatter, der bredte interessen for “moderne” britisk science fiction ud over genrens kernefans.
