James Baldwin (født 2. august 1924 i New York, USA, død 1. december 1987 i Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Frankrig) var en amerikansk forfatter, essayist og dramatiker, kendt for sin skarpe prosa og sit engagement i race, identitet og moralsk ansvar. Han skrev både skønlitteratur og ikke-fiktion, ofte med et tæt sammenfiltret blik på det private menneskes erfaringer og samfundets strukturer. Baldwin regnes i litteraturhistorien som en af det 20. århundredes mest betydningsfulde stemmer, netop fordi han formåede at løfte samtidens racepolitiske spørgsmål ind i en bredere, litterær og filosofisk samtale. Hans tidlige gennembrud og efterfølgende værker fik stor bevågenhed og bidrog til at forme amerikansk litteratur og den kritiske forståelse af protestlitteraturens muligheder og faldgruber.
