Forfatterbiografi

Jack Kerouac (egentlig Jean-Louis Kérouac) var en amerikansk forfatter, digter og kunstner, født i Lowell, Massachusetts, den 12. marts 1922, og død den 21. oktober 1969. Han regnes som en central skikkelse i Beat Generation og forbindes særligt med 1950’ernes gennembrud for en mere direkte, improvisatorisk og samtidskritisk litterær stil. Kerouac blev først for alvor kendt med romanen On the Road (1957), som gjorde bevægelsen internationalt synlig og efterlod et varigt aftryk på amerikansk prosa. Dharma Bums (1958) fortsætter kredsløbet om venskaber, rejser og åndelig søgen, her med tydelig inspiration fra zenbuddhistisk tænkning. Kerouac skrev desuden både romaner og digte og omtales ofte som forfatter til et større, sammenhængende livsværk, hvor figurer og temaer glider på tværs af udgivelser. Hans betydning for litteraturen ligger især i den måde, han forenede amerikansk roadnovelle, jazzrytmer og en eksistentiel længsel efter sandhed og frihed, og dermed påvirkede eftertidens blik på både stil og emner i efterkrigstidens litteratur.
