Forfatterbiografi

J. M. Coetzee, født John Maxwell Coetzee i Cape Town, Sydafrika, den 9. februar 1940, er en af de mest indflydelsesrige nulevende forfattere på engelsk. Han har både sydafrikansk baggrund og har siden 2006 været australsk statsborger. Coetzee blev internationalt kendt for romaner, der kredser om magt, vold, fremmedgørelse og etiske dilemmaer, ofte med en nøgtern, intellektuel stil og et kritisk blik på historien. Hans ry blev for alvor cementeret med Life & Times of Michael K, der vandt Booker Prize i 1983, og senere Disgrace, som vandt Booker Prize i 1999. Coetzees betydning for litteraturen understreges yderligere af, at han modtog Nobelprisen i litteratur i 2003.
