Forfatterbiografi

Herman Melville (1819-1891) var en amerikansk forfatter, kendt som roman-, novelle- og digterforfatter. Han regnes især for at have skrevet nogle af 1800-tallets mest markante søfortællinger, hvor mennesket sættes i relation til havet, arbejdet og de store moralske og eksistentielle spørgsmål. Hans gennembrud og vedvarende omdømme knytter sig først og fremmest til Moby-Dick (1851), der både er en intens hvalfangstfortælling og en symbolsk undersøgelse af samtidens idéer og konflikter. Melville skrev efterfølgende flere værker, herunder romaner og tekster, der kredser om identitet, magt og tvivl, og han blev senere også genkendt for sin betydning i den bredere litteraturhistorie som en forfatter, der udvidede mulighederne for den amerikanske romanform.
