Forfatterbiografi

Georges Bataille (10. september 1897–8./9. juli 1962) var en fransk forfatter og intellektuel, aktiv inden for litteratur, filosofi og kunsthistorie. Hans skrivning forbinder ofte et antropologisk og filosofisk blik med en litterær udforskning af det grænseoverskridende, herunder seksualitet, mystik og det irrationelle. Som forfatter kredsede han i både essayistik og skønlitterære former om overskridelsens betydning for kunsten og om forholdet mellem liv og død. Batailles karriere er også knyttet til redaktionel og kulturel institutionalisering: han grundlagde tidsskriftet Critique i 1946, som fungerede som et interdisciplinært forum for studier af nye udgivelser og idéer. Værker som Histoire de l’œil (1928) og L’Expérience intérieure (1943) er blandt de mest omtalte, og hans kunst- og billedtænkning kommer til udtryk i blandt andet Lascaux; ou, la naissance de l’art (1955).
