Edgar Allan Poe (19. januar 1809 i Boston, Massachusetts – 7. oktober 1849 i Baltimore) var en amerikansk forfatter, digter, redaktør og litteraturkritiker. Han regnes blandt de centrale skikkelser i amerikansk romantik og gotisk fortællekunst, og hans fortællinger i særligt mysterium og det makabre har haft stor international gennemslagskraft. Poe var en tydelig formeksperimentator, og hans arbejde som redaktør og kritiker satte fokus på stil og konstruktion som bærende elementer i litteraturen. Hans bedst kendte tekster omfatter digtet “The Raven” og noveller som “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, “The Tell-Tale Heart” og “The Purloined Letter”, ofte forbundet med udviklingen af moderne fortælleformer inden for både mysterielitteratur og kortprosa. I romanlængde skrev han dog kun én fuldendt, længere fortælling: “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket”, som udkom i 1838, og som senere blev genstand for omfattende læsning og fortolkning som en grænseoverskridende blanding af eventyr og fortælleteknisk eksperiment.
