Forfatterbiografi

Daniel Defoe (født 1660 i London, død 24. april 1731 i London) var en engelsk forfatter, journalist og pamflettist. Han forbindes især med den tidlige engelske romantradition og skrev både fiktion og mange slags sakprosa, ofte med satirisk og polemisk kant. Defoe er kendt for romanen Robinson Crusoe (først udgivet 1719), som han senere udbyggede med fortsættelser; værket blev et gennembrud og har fået stor betydning for udbredelsen af realistisk eventyrprosa i det 18. århundrede. Blandt hans øvrige centrale romaner er Moll Flanders (1722) og Roxana (1724). Defoes karriere som skribent strakte sig over flere genrer og publiceringsformer, og han blev med tiden anerkendt som en litterær skikkelse, der kunne kombinere detaljeret fortælling med samfunds- og menneskeforståelse. Samlet regnes han for en af grundlæggerne af den engelske roman og dermed en vigtig forfatter i litteraturhistorien.
